Maggie Stiefvater just wrote an excellent post about the importance of education while being a writer, whether it’s formal or informal. And she had a quote that I exceptionally loved:
“I spent several hours every evening writing, and when I wasn’t writing, I was reading, and when I wasn’t reading, I was living…”
I love this quote! And maybe it’s the kick in the butt I need. I’m doing the Reading. But I’m not doing the Living. And because I’m not living, I don’t think I’m doing the writing.
My days consist of going to work, which I love dearly and I’m so thankful everyday I went to Library School. But when I get home, I stop living. I usually park my butt on the sofa, turn on the TV, plant my laptop on my lap, and munch on what ever candy or chip bag is closest to me. (This definitely helps explain how I got to the size I am, but that’s a whole other issue I don’t want to think about.) And then once it gets really late I try to work up the energy to turn everything off, hoist myself off the sofa, and go to bed (where I read for at least half an hour).
Nowhere in there is there any living. And my weekends are essentially the same as my after school extracurricular activities. In other words: nothing.
So, how is this living?
I can’t say I’m not making any type of impact on the world, because I know I’m doing that at work. I guess more importantly is what impact am I making on me? What do I need to change to start living?
Behold - the fanciest thing I own, a box full of Advance Readers’ Copies of TEAM HUMAN, a book that Justine Larbalestier and I wrote, which will not be out until JULY! Would you LIKE one?
It is about that first time in school when your best girlfriend has a boyfriend and she loves him SO MUCH and she talks about him ALL THE TIME… and also, he is a vampire.
Seemed a good idea to start tumblring with a FANCY GIVEAWAY!
If this gets reblogged 100 times, I shall put all who did so in a hat for one of these fine fancy things…
